Why Greece
Where Ancient History
Meets Modern Freedom
"Greece offers a travel experience unlike any other — where the weight of millennia of history sits alongside some of the Mediterranean's most vibrant and welcoming LGBTQ+ communities."
— Queer Destinations, 2025
Greece has emerged as one of the Mediterranean's most welcoming destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers. Civil unions were legalised in 2015, and in 2024 Greece became the first Orthodox Christian-majority country to legalise same-sex marriage — a landmark moment that reflects a rapidly evolving social landscape. Mykonos has long been a global LGBTQ+ icon; Athens' Gazi district offers a thriving urban scene; and a growing network of certified, inclusive properties spans the country.

Athens
Gazi — The Heart of Athens' LGBTQ+ Scene
Ancient Roots, Modern Pride
Greece — birthplace of democracy and philosophy — has a long, complex relationship with queerness. Today, Athens' Gazi district and Mykonos island are among Europe's most celebrated LGBTQ+ destinations.
Island Diversity
From the party scene of Mykonos to the volcanic drama of Santorini, the Minoan heritage of Crete, and the emerging appeal of quieter islands like Naxos and Paros — Greece offers an island for every traveller.
Year-Round Mediterranean Climate
With over 250 days of sunshine annually, Greece offers exceptional travel windows. Late spring and early autumn deliver ideal conditions — warm weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices.
36 Million Visitors in 2024
Greece recorded approximately 36 million international arrivals in 2024, cementing its status as one of the Mediterranean's top destinations. The tourism industry has actively embraced inclusive travel.

A Note on the Landscape
Greece's legal progress has been significant, particularly the 2024 marriage equality law. Social attitudes vary — major urban centres (Athens, Thessaloniki) and tourist islands (Mykonos, Santorini) are highly welcoming. More rural and conservative areas may be less openly accepting. LGBTQ+ travellers will find the tourism industry broadly professional and accommodating across the country.

Know Your Neighbourhoods
In Athens, Gazi is the LGBTQ+ heartbeat — packed with bars and clubs. Psiri and Monastiraki are also welcoming. In Mykonos, the entire island is LGBTQ+-friendly; Super Paradise and Elia beaches are particularly popular. In Thessaloniki, the waterfront and Ladadika district are the most open areas.
Best Time to Visit
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer the best balance: warm weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices. June is prime for Athens and Thessaloniki Pride. July–August is peak season — hot, crowded, and expensive, but the island party scene is at its height. Avoid August in Athens — the city empties and many locals head to the islands.
Island Hopping
Greece's island network is best explored by ferry. Book ferries in advance for summer travel — routes between Athens (Piraeus), Mykonos, Santorini, and Crete fill quickly. Hellenic Seaways and Blue Star Ferries are the main operators. Flying is faster but ferries offer a more scenic and social experience.
Currency & Costs
Greece uses the Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted in tourist areas and cities. Mykonos and Santorini are among Europe's most expensive destinations — budget accordingly. Athens and Thessaloniki offer excellent value. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory (10% is standard in restaurants).
Connectivity & Apps
Greek SIM cards are available at airports and phone shops — Cosmote has the best coverage. Uber operates in Athens. On islands, use local taxis or rent scooters/ATVs. Google Maps works well. Grindr and Scruff are widely used across the country.
Getting Around
Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) is the main hub. Thessaloniki, Mykonos, Santorini, Heraklion (Crete), and other islands have direct international flights in summer. Domestic flights are affordable and fast. The Athens Metro is modern, efficient, and connects the airport to the city centre.
